Luthien and Beren

We've decided to focus on Beren and Luthien's story. Firstly, because it just such an epic story, and secondly, because we're romantic saps. It would also be interesting to design and animate Luthien, as she's such a strong female character.

We finally narrowed down our choices and decided to choose the segment where Luthien and Beren steal the Silmaril from Morgoth. It seems like a simple scene, but could have great emotional impact - mainly because Luthien is the one who saves the day. Earlier in the story, Beren refuses to travel further with Luthien in order to keep her safe, but when Luthien confronts Morgoth, Beren has no choice but to watch.

In sum total, there are three conflicts in this segment of the story: Luthien versus Morgoth, Beren versus Luthien, and Beren versus himself. Knowing this, we've decided to capitalise on Beren's emotional distress and visually capture it with a flashback to the first time he met Luthien.

Current flow of the story:
1. Beren and Luthien arrive at the mouth of Morgoth's lair

2. Beren thinks they can't do it and falls into despair. Luthien decides to go in herself

3. Luthien sings/ dances

4. Beren has a flashback of when he first met Luthien

5. When he comes to, Luthien has succeeded in making everyone fall asleep

6. Luthien pries the Silmaril out with a knife

7. Accidentally drops it, Beren goes to pick it up and they escape

8. Morgoth stirs, the his eyes open
